What the Future Holds

Today is a big day in Canada, as our government faces significant decisions around the omnibus budget bill, and does so in the face of climate change and growing economic disparity.

I just returned from five days at Hollyhock Centre’s Social Change Institute, feeling more conscious of the perilous situation we are in. AND more grateful for those who are so consciously choosing to do all they can to make the future brighter. It reminds me of an David Orr quote, from early work he did on environmental education. He said:

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.”

This is one of the goals of Spirited Social Change: to help gather, train and nurture people of moral courage. We began with monthly dinners, curious to see who might show up. And are moved that you did. This summer is a quieter period, as we contemplate and plan for what comes next.

Monthly dinners will continue in the Fall, with the possibility of expanding to additional locations the following year. We’ve also been talking with Leadnow about building resources and support networks for community leaders interested in developing better practices of self-care. And we’ve been strategizing about a larger speaker series. The fantastic Carmen Mills is working on designing a new logo, and then we hope to build a more useful web presence. In addition, there are gardens being build at Lakeview, and we are happily supporting that. If you have ideas, input, etc, please dont hesitate to be in touch.

David Orr speaks to the need for a new definition of success, and a new story of the good life. Like most people, I struggle with this, amid the urgency and pressures of our time. But when I am well rested, and things are temporarily calm, I know that, for me, the good life includes getting to eat and sing and face these challenges with all of you. You lovers of life. You people of moral courage.

Thanks for the past six months. Here’s to the next six.

Much love,
Christine
